A fan-made mod for Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 64 adds plenty of new content to the original game, including Sonic the Hedgehog as a new fighter.
Super Smash Bros. is one of the greatest fighting game series in history. With a number of different characters and series represented across the Nintendo multiverse, including several third-party cameos, the series has amassed a large fan following. Smash’s uniqueness to the fighting game genre has also inspired other fighting games in the series, such as Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and Warner Bros.
The original Super Smash Bros. launched on the Nintendo 64 in January 1999, and the original only featured a list of 12 characters from Nintendo’s elite franchises, such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, and Metroid. With the release of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018 and its various DLC added in the years that followed, the franchise has now seen an expanded roster of 89 characters from series like Minecraft, Persona, Street Fighter, and more. Kingdom Hearts, whose main character is Sora is the most requested character to join the series.
However, mods for Super Smash Bros. looking to bring the fighters from the following into the original game. The YouTube channel Smash Remix has been working hard since 2019 to bring characters from later games, such as Ganondorf, Wario, and Bowser back to the first title in the series. Now, the newest character to be added in the most recent patch is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic originally debuted in Smash with Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii, and has since become a staple of the franchise’s roster. This isn’t the first time Sonic has surpassed other video game titles, with the character appearing in titles like Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, Angry Birds, and even Fall Guys.
The inclusion of Sonic in this Smash Remix mod is an amazing achievement, as it retains many of the character’s hallmarks from his appearances in later games, such as the spinning dash. and the ability to transform into Super Sonic. His appearance in the trailer was also accompanied by a rearrangement of the track “Live and Learn” from Sonic Adventure 2, which has now been ported to the alluring Nintendo 64 font.

While there are currently no plans for another Super Smash Bros game following the release of Ultimate’s final DLC, it’s been fun to see fan-made creations like Smash Remix thrive with players. and will continue to contribute to the longevity of the franchise for many years to come.
